ICO mim™ (Mobile Interactive Media)
DVB-SH Alpha Trial




ICO is authorised by the Federal Communications Commission to offer MSS (mobile satellite services) in the United States using a geostationary satellite. ICO has the opportunity in the future to seek authorisation from the FCC to integrate an ancillary terrestrial component (ATC) into its MSS system to provide integrated satellite and terrestrial services. ICO’s satellite is scheduled for launch in March, 2008, and ICO’s alpha trial will commence shortly thereafter. The alpha trial will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada and Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES
 

ICO will be testing various aspects of its ICO mim service, including reception in a variety of urban and suburban settings, efficiency of spectrum use, feasibility of broadband components for ICO mim and product performance.

 
SERVICE CONTENT
 

ICO mim will integrate three types of service: Entertainment (10-15 live video channels with premium content); Guidance (interactive location-based services with GPS navigation); and Assistance (emergency calling and messaging). ICO recently announced that NBC Universal has agreed to provide video content for the alpha trial.

TRANSMISSION
 

G-1 geostationary satellite due to be launched in March 2008. This will offer coverage to all 50 states, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. With appropriate regulatory approval coverage could extend to other parts of North America.

Satellite coverage can be complemented with an ancillary terrestrial component.
